Banarasi saree are globally famous for its superior craftsmanship. They originate from Varanasi which is its present Sanskritized name. Its ancient religious name was Kasi, and is colloquially called Benares, hence the name Banarasi. Varanasi is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world. The main district where brocades are woven is Alaipura.
Paithani popular motifs has evolved over time. In the Shalivahan period,on the palla bagula and hansa were the used. In the Yadava period, the main motif was suvarna kamal (lotus). While in the Mughal period, several types of trees, birds and flowers developed. During this period tota-maina, huma parinda, baheshti parinda, dranksh bale (trees and the creepers), anar (pomegranate) bel, gukran bale, kuyari ( mango) and other such motifs were used extensively.
