Detailed Information:
Chanderi sarees are manufatured in Chanderi, a township which dates back to the Chandella king, Kirtivarma. It is believed that the tradition of Chanderi weaving, started in AD 1305, post the migration of weavers from Lakhnoti, now in Dacca, Bangladesh. Initially crafted for royalty and nobility, Chanderi sarees have evolved into timeless classics cherished by connoisseurs worldwide.
The fabric having its lustrous texture was developed initially from Fine Muslin. The technique is similar to calendaring whereas the saris are beaten with the help of a Kundi over a wooden block with a help of a mallet. Characterized by their lightweight texture and sheer elegance, these sarees are traditionally woven from pure silk or cotton, sometimes blended with zari threads for added allure.
Various motifs are popular like asharfi ( gold coin), chidi ( stylised floral motif), phool butta ( flower motif), bundaki ( circle in extra weft), akhrot ( walnut), zhaad (tree), even geometrical motifs are used. The chanderi sarees sometimes have elborate borders like phool-kinar ( flower with flower motif), pan-kinar ( border with beetle leaf motif), Golpatti (flat gold border). The master weaver suggests the designs and helps in setting up the loom.
