Each Ikat silk saree has luxuriously and Vibrant colour combinations which enhance the beauty of the wearer. Patan the ancient capital of Gujarat, is considered to have originated the Patola weave and the was a major centre for manufacture. The complex and time-consuming steps of Patola uses resist treatment of warp and weft by partial tying before dyeing. The steps must do multiple times to get the pattern. The wrapping is made with fine two-ply cotton thread. Yarns must be put into proper positions ready for the warp and weft from the bundles which were made for the dyeing process. The weaving process is complex where the weavers periodically inspect to check that the weave is matching the pattern perfectly.

The word Ikat originates from the Malay-Indonesian word Mengikat, which means to bind, knot, or wind around. In India, Ikat textiles are known as Patola in Gujarat, Telia Rumal and Pochampally Ikat in Andhra Pradesh, Bandh in Odisha.

  • Detailed Information: The oldest Patola to have survived in India can be dated around the second half of the 19th century. The Design Motifs: The motifs and compositions of Patola use abstract geometrical forms taken from Flora and Fauna. The patterns are harmonious and the diagonal diamond shapes have various motifs inside them in some times contrasting colours. Red, Black, Yellow, Green, and Blue in purest colours are used often. Contemporary Ikat weavers are now experimenting with new colours with this traditional weave in innovative manner. Most Double Ikat compositions uses diagonal or square grid in which geometrical or figurative designs are woven in Double Ikat. The hauz, or core unit, is formed by combining these two parts. It is framed by a large red or black block and hauz is adorned with a mosaic-like pattern of motifs. The Ikat patterns forming squares at the corners are its distinguishing feature. Three Distinct Ikat forms and Techniques: Single Ikat, Combined Ikat and Double Ikat. In single Ikat either the weft or the Warp are tie-dyed before weaving. This technique is mainly used in Rajkot Patola, Pochampalli of Telangana and some bandha textiles from Orissa. In the combined Ikat both the warp and weft can co-exist in different parts of the same saree and can occasionally overlap.
