This century one can see that the weaving and the tie and dying has been cross fertilized between Samblapur-Sonepur region with Naupatna region. In both area one can find similarity in motifs which usually comprise of lines and floral and animal motifs. Ikat is a tie-dyed technique practiced in Sambalpur and Bargarh. The renowned traditional design of chaupad (squares)has strong elements of Black and Red.
The word Ikat originates from the Malay-Indonesian word Mengikat, which means to bind, knot, or wind around. In India, Ikat textiles are known as Bandh in Odisha, Patola in Gujarat, Telia Rumal and Pochampally Ikat in Andhra Pradesh.
